The Healthy Way

Cranberry your way to a healthy diet

Everyone knows what's in it for them when they go on a diet. Dull and tasteless foods, lack of energy to do anything, a hungry stomach—the kind that grumbles all the time. But dieting brings about so much benefits for the brief span of discomfort they require. For anyone with a sweet tooth looking to go on a diet there is this alternative called cranberry juice diet. Thinking of dieting? With cranberry juice, there's no reason not to.

Going on a cranberry juice diet is like taking your body on a long vacation, and by “long” we mean two to three days tops. During this time you consume only cranberry juice and no solid foods whatsoever. Also called a juice fast in a broader sense, cranberry juice diet is an extreme form of detoxification, one that has numerous health benefits when pulled off right.

But why should you—or anyone for that matter—go on a cranberry juice diet? One word: fats. Fats are a haven for all sorts of toxins inside the body, and what cranberry juice dieting does is it increases metabolism so the body is forced to convert those fats into fuel to sustain activity. It's a complicated process, but you don't need to worry too much about it as long as you follow your dietitian's directions.

What you need to know about going on a cranberry juice diet
  • Going on a cranberry juice diet isn't for the winter or autumn seasons; the body is under a lot of stress as it needs to keep itself warm this time of year. Diet proponents suggest going on a cranberry juice diet only during summer or spring.
  • In preparation, fatty and dairy products, alcohol, nicotine, caffeine and sugar must be reduced or, if possible, eliminated from your diet at least a week before dieting. Your new diet during this time consists of organic fruits, beans and vegetables.
  • 32 to 64 ounces of natural cranberry juice a day is recommended. If going for variety, avoid citrus fruits.
  • A diet combination of vegetables and fruits is recommended.
  • Drink at least six glasses of warm filtered water during the days you're on diet.
  • Stay away from manufactured juices as much as possible, even if it's cranberry juice. For the next couple of days your body is only taking in juice and nothing else: at least make it a point to stick to all natural and unsweetened cranberry juice.

Dieting on cranberry juice help lost weight. It's true, this type of juice fasting cleanses the urinary tract and help you lose weight, but it should only be done under the supervision of a dietitian. Maintain a light diet after fasting so you don't gain those lost pounds back in.

Known side effects

Some folks react negatively to juice fasting, others get away with it unscathed. Perhaps the worst is to develop acne or skin boils. But don't start up just yet. The acne is simply a sign of toxins coming out of the skin, and it should go away as soon as you get off your cranberry juice diet.

Others develop bad breath. This happens when the toxins are expelled through the alimentary tract. Also you'd begin to notice a mild sour taste in your mouth. Don't worry. This is temporary while your body adjusts to your new diet.
