UTI and How Cranberries Help Control It

After a series of tests, the nurse confirms you have bladder infection. Then the doctor walks in and starts enumerating the possible ways you could've acquired urinary tract infection. Don't worry. Actually the terms “bladder infection” and “urinary tract infection” are often used interchangeably, but they mean the same thing: that you're stick and you need to take care of it right away.

How is drinking cranberry juice going to change all this? Let's find out.

Those three words

And it's not “I love you.”

Urinary tract infection (UTI) occurs when the urinary tract is irritated and inflamed due to bacterial infection. Sure, urine contains salts, fluids and waste products. But it normally doesn't contain bacteria, this harmful bacteria that causes the infection. When the bacteria sticks onto the bladder, it multiplies at an alarming rate, and the case develops into a full-blown urinary tract infection.

It's easy to tell when you got urinary tract infection. A number of symptoms include a burning sensation while urinating, a frequent desire to urinate even when little to nothing comes out, and bladder spasms. Other symptoms include foul-smelling urine and a mild fever.

How cranberry juice helps

Drinking cranberry juice helps out a great deal. Known for its anti-adhesive properties, cranberry washes away bacteria, and other foreign stuff, from the urinary tract. Experts believe, if it hasn't been proven already, that the fruit poses a very potent and promising threat against all types of urinary and bladder infection, not just UTI. This includes cystitis and pyelonephritis, etc.

It is safe to drink unsweetened cranberry juice products and pure homemade cranberry juice – both retains the fruit's nutrients and therefore able to flush out toxins in the bladder. Consults with your doctor about the recommended servings of cranberry juice every day. While the juice is good for your health and bladder, drinking too much of it won't speed up the treatment.

Take note that urinary tract infections are uncomfortable and often painful. So don't wait until you get it. Drink a healthy dose of cranberry juice every day to avoid contracting it in the first place.
