Cranberries and Respiratory Diseases

All of us knew cranberries are good for treating UTI (or urinary tract infection) and now we just learned that they're good for the teeth as well. But did you know cranberries can take care of your heart, too? It's official. Cranberries, or cranberry juice, help fight heart complications and other respiratory diseases, recent studies found out.

Cranberries: A way to your heart

This isn't a tomatoes-are-filled-with-lycopene advertisement, but a recent study proved that cranberries can reduce the risk of heart diseases and certain cancers.

In April 2005, during the annual congress of the International Union of Physiological Sciences, a study reported that pigs with the condition atherosclerosis (a common cause of heart disease) had restored blood vessel health after eating a daily dose of cranberry powder in their food. But the case doesn't end there. Other studies also concluded that people who drink cranberry juice have very good blood vessel function as well as higher levels of HDL (good cholesterol). For a sweet and great-tasting fruit, cranberries pack a real punch.

Cranberries and Cancer

This superfruit is also known to help reduce the risk of these types of cancers:

  • Cervical cancer
  • Lung cancer
  • Prostate cancer
  • Leukemia
  • Breast cancer

This fact is supported by a study published on the June 2004 edition of the Journal of Nutrition. A compound in the fruit—not just the juice—is said to be responsible for this highly beneficial effect.

A heartful of cranberries

The recommended daily amount of cranberry juice for adults is one full cup. For kids, it's half a cup. Anything more is unnecessary, and it could lead to other conditions such as obesity, excessive gas and abdominal pain.

So a glass of cranberry juice a day really does keep the doctor away. It's a fact: cranberry—and cranberry juice, too—is good for the bladder and teeth and heart, and serves as a solid defense against certain cancers. Is there anything this fruit can't do?
